Meet the Author: Victoria De Grazia
Victoria De Grazia is an American author of Italian descent. Her family came from Sicily, where her grandfather, father, and three uncles were active in local politics. As a young person, her perspective on the world was profoundly influenced by her family's travels across the United States and Europe. After her family moved to Italy in 1963, she married Italian citizen Leonardo Peggi, and continues to visit Europe regularly when she is not at her home in New York.
De Grazia's credentials include a distinguished academic career. After her education at Princeton High School and Miss Barry's American School in Florence, Italy, she attended Smith College, graduating magna cum laude in 1968. De Grazia gained her Ph.D. in History from Columbia University, and "became interested in studying how force and persuasion or hard and soft power mix differently in liberal and authoritarian systems of rule." Her doctoral dissertation "won the Shepard Clough dissertation award and Society for Italian Historian Studies prize for best first manuscript." She has taught at Lehman College of the City of New York, Rutgars University, and currently teaches at Columbia University. De Grazia's most distinguished works include The Culture of Consent: Mass Organization of Leisure in Fascist Italy and How Fascism Ruled Women: Italy, 1920-1945.
